200,000 “R” models from Volkswagen

Volkswagen announced a production milestone for the “R” model series that reached the 200,000th mark. Since 2002, Golf IV (R32), Golf V (R32), Golf VI (R), Golf VII (R), Touareg (R50), Passat (R36) and Scirocco (R) models joined the family wearing the “R” badge.

The 200,000th model was a VW Golf VII R (facelift) finished in black, with the Performance Pack and the Akrapovič exhaust system. The car was delivered to Keith Williamson, in the United Kingdom, who already owns a VW Golf V R32 and a VW Golf VI GTI.

The owner Keith Williamson said: ”I get so much enjoyment from my Golf GTI and the Golf R just lifts that level of driver involvement even higher. I’m particularly excited about having the Performance Pack on the car. This is another car that won’t be leaving my collection!”

Jost Capito, Executive Director of Volkswagen R, who handed over the special model to the customer at Robinsons Volkswagen Peterborough said: “Developing and globally retailing 200,000 units in 15 years is a big achievement. Volkswagen R is a small business that employs around 350 colleagues. Everyone in our company contributes to the success of the company. My personal thank you goes out to everyone in the team, but also in the Retailer network, who should take pride in this milestone.”

The current VW Golf VII R (facelift) is fitted with a turbocharged 2.0 liter engine combined with a 7 speed DSG transmission and the 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. Since 2017, the engine was producing 310 hp / 228 kw and 400 Nm of torque but the car will be downgraded to 300 hp / 220 kw from September 2018 due to stricter emission regulations and WLTP testing.

Volkswagen fans however do not need to worry because a all new generation of the Golf is expected to be revealed in 2019, followed by updated and more powerful GTI and R variants.
