Honda Civic Type R sets new record at Estoril circuit
Honda Civic Type R (FK8) continues setting front wheel drive production car lap records in famous tracks all over Europe, as part of the Type R Challenge 2018.
This time, the fastest FWD hot hatch on sale, set a new lap record at Estoril circuit in Portugal, with a time of 2 min 01.84 seconds. This is more than 2 seconds faster than the previous record of 2.04.08 that was set in 2016 by the previous generation Honda Civic Type R (FK2).
The Estoril track is 4.2 km long with two hairpins, a difficult chicane and a very long main straight, which means drivers experience an unusually broad range of speeds over one lap.
Tiago Monteiro, Honda WTCR driver, who drove the car on its limits around the Portuguese circuit commented: “We came here with a goal to beat the existing lap record set by the previous car but you can never take anything for granted – I mean it’s a lap record so it’s no easy feat. You have to have supreme confidence in the car to attack around Estoril, and the new Type R is just so powerful, smooth and confidence-inspiring. We beat the lap record, smashed the record actually.”
The next goal of the Japanese hot hatch is to break the lap record at the Hungaroring circuit in Hungary, with former Formula 1 World Champion and current NSX Super GT driver Jenson Button (UK) behind the wheel.
For those who haven’t followed the Type R Challenge 2018, here is a list with the lap records currently held by the Honda Civic Type R (FK8):
