CUPRA Leon: Official teaser for the Plug-in Hybrid hot hatch
CUPRA, which is the separate brand for the performance vehicles of SEAT, published the first teaser for the upcoming CUPRA Leon which will be fully unveiled on the 20th of February, before its debut at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show. The model will be a direct successor to the SEAT Leon Cupra 300, and it will be the first Leon to wear the CUPRA badge and the first with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
According to the press release, the CUPRA Leon will be offered in both hatchback and Sportstourer bodystyles. The first official image reveals a redesigned bumper with enlarged air intakes and a new grille housing the CUPRA emblem. The main bodywork will be shared with the SEAT Leon, with a new aero pack including new bumpers, side sills, larger diameter wheels, roof spoiler, larger tailpipes and a rear diffuser. Inside, the car is expected to have new seats with heavier bolsters and other sporty design touches, while retaining the SEAT Digital Cockpit (10,25″ digital instrument cluster and a central 10″ touchscreen for the infotainment) of the just-released fourth-generation Leon.
As for the engine, the CUPRA Leon will be a plug-in hybrid. The car will be closely related with the VW Golf GTE and the Skoda Octavia iV RS, sharing the same platform (MQB Evo) and powertrain. That means it will be fitted with a 1.4 TSI engine and an electric motor, which will offer a combined output of 180 kW / 245 hp. Power will be transmitted to the front axle through a 6-speed DSG automatic, while a 13 kWh battery will offer an electric range of 60 km.
If those figures sound disappointing to Leon fans, don’t worry as according to the latest rumours, the Spaniards are working on an even more powerful version with the 2.0 TSI engine which will serve as a successor to the SEAT Leon Cupra R and will be closely related to the upcoming VW Golf VIII R.
Besides the road-going CUPRA Leon, the company will also unveil its racing derivatives including the CUPRA Leon Competición and the CUPRA e-Racer. Stay tuned at hothatch.com.au for more details on the February 20th
