Honda Civic Type R sets new record at Mount Panorama Bathurst
After completing the Type R Challenge 2018 in Europe, Honda Civic Type R (FK8) headed to Australia with Jenson Button behind the wheel, setting a new front wheel drive record at Mount Panorama Bathurst with a lap time of 2 minutes and 35.207 seconds.
Formula One World Champion and current NSX Super GT driver, Jenson Button is no stranger to Mount Panorama Bathurst as in 2011 he set the all time record in his F1 car with 1 minute and 48.8 seconds.
According to Caradvice, the record run was completed on Easter Monday (22 April 2019) in a closed track. For a better comparison, a VW Golf R on semi-slick tyres lapped in 2 minutes and 36.9 seconds, while a Hyundai i30N driven by an amateur racer on semi-slicks did 2 minutes and 41.2 seconds.
Jenson Button said after his record: “Anything you drive around Mount Panorama is pretty amazing. Up across the top of the mountain, the Type R is so fast through there, so once I got into a rhythm and got used to the speed you can carry, it was really good fun. I definitely put the car through its paces and it was a quick time, 2 minutes 35 seconds is a really good time in a front-wheel drive car and it was hot as well, so I think if it was cooler you could go a bit quicker, but I do feel like I got everything out of the car.”
