M-Sport launches the new Ford Fiesta R5
M-Sport launched the new version of the Ford Fiesta R5, designed to meet the specifications of FIA’s R5 category. The new racecar replaces the previous Fiesta R5 which was launched back in 2013 and enjoyed huge success in racing with 40 championship titles all over the world including the European Rally Champinoship title for 4 years in row.
According to the press release, the car is based on a Ford Fiesta ST-Line however as we can see, the vast majority of its components have been upgraded to race-spec. Development started in January 2018, with an engineering team led by rally engineer Bernardo Fernandes. Since then the car has been tested on tarmac and gravel by seasoned test drivers, rally winners and even F1 race winners.
Visually, the new Fiesta R5 is characterised by an aggresive and aerodynamic bodykit including considerably wider fenders, larger front and rear bumpers, side sills, a roof scoop and a large rear wing. The car looks more down to earth than the more powerful Fiesta WRC but also more potent than the Ford Fiesta R2.
Under the bonnet, the modified turbocharged 1.6 liter engine produces 216 kW / 290 hp and 475 Nm of torque at 4.000 rpm. It is mated with a new Sadev five-speed sequential gearbox that sends the power to all four wheels working together with front and rear differential units.
The new suspension setting is comprised by front and rear McPherson struts with redesigned three-way adjustable dampers from Reiger with aluminium damper bodies and remodelled geometry. Other features include a hydraulic servo-assisted rack and pinion steering and Brembo forged four-piston front and rear calipers.
Ford Performance Senior Manager, Gerard Quinn, said: “This new Fiesta R5 also enables us to provide a high-quality replacement for its remarkably successful predecessor which was introduced six years ago. In the past two seasons the Fiesta R5 has won more than 40 championships globally, and we are looking forward to much more success with this latest model.”
M-Sport Managing Director, Malcolm Wilson OBE, said: “The test programme has been extensive, and we have worked hard to ensure this new car suits every level of driver. We have quite literally travelled the world – testing on a wide range of surfaces, in varying conditions and with a whole host of drivers taking to the wheel. This car is extremely important to us, and its adaptability is vital to its success.”
The new Ford Fiesta R5 will make its debut at the Ypres Rally on th 28th of June, with driver Éric Camilli behind the wheel.
