Audi S3 MK3
The third generation of the Audi S3 launched in 2013 and received a facelift in 2016.
The car is powered by a more powerful 2.0 TFSI engine with an output of 300 hp (221 kw) and 380 Nm of torque. Audi states that the only thing in common with the previous generation is the displacement of 1,984cc. The engine features new pistons with stronger bolts and new rings, as well as reinforced connecting rods with new mounts transferring the power to the crankshaft. The cylinder head is made of a new lightweight aluminium alloy designed with high strength and temperature resistance in mind. The engine weighs in at 148 kilograms, which is 5 kilograms less than the previous generation. When equipped with the optional six-speed S tronic, the Audi S3 Sportback sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in only 5.0 seconds thanks to the quattro AWD system. The six-speed manual transmission needs just five-tenths of a second more while the top speed is electronically governed at 250 km/h (155.34 mph). Launch Control delivers the engine’s power to the road with defined tire slip.
The Audi S3 MK3 is based on the MQB platform which means that in comparison with its predecessor the front axle has been moved forward by 42 millimeters (1.65 in) and the engine is assembled with a 12-degree slope backwards. The subframe and the hinge bearing for the front suspension are made of aluminum, as are the front fenders and the hood. Together with the lighter engine they save around 22 kilograms of weight. Progressive steering is one of the innovations the Audi S3 MK3. Its rack is meshed such that the gear ratio varies independently of steering input, making it more direct in the event of strong steering maneuvers. The front suspension is a McPherson construction and the rear suspension is a four-link while three wishbones per wheel are attached rigidly to the steel subframe for enhanced handling.
The exterior of the Audi S3 MK3 is considered to be subtle for a hot hatch that is offering that level of performance. A trained eye will notice the larger intakes on the redesigned bumpers, the aluminium-style mirror housings and the grille that features horizontal lines with chrome finish and the red s3 logo. At the rear, noone can mistake the S3 for a base model thanks to the four exhaust pipes (two on each side), the diffuser and the roof spoiler. Inside, we find sports seats, high quality upholstery (Nappa leather, Alcantara, Velvet), S dials on the instrument cluster, special S3 screen on the infotainment system, sports steering wheel bearing the S3 emblem and aluminium switches, as well as brushed stainless steel pedals.
