BMW M135i xDrive
In June 2019, BMW launched the third generation of the 1 Series which for the first time was based on a new front-wheel-drive architecture (supporting the xDrive AWD system), together with its most powerful version, the M135i xDrive.
Under the bonnet there is a new TwinPower Turbo four cylinder 2.0 liter engine producing 225 kw / 306 hp and 450 Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels thanks to the xDrive system with a newly developed mechanical Torsen limited-slip differential housed inside the 8-speed Steptronic Sport dual clutch transmission. The car can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 4,8″ (or 4,7″ with the M Performance package) while its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. That means the new model is slower than the BMW M140i but equally fast with the BMW M135i xDrive (facelift).
According to BMW the third generation of the 1 Series “showcases the debut appearance of BMW’s cutting-edge new front-wheel-drive architecture”, offering “benchmark driving dynamics for the segment and a far more spacious interior”, benefiting from the ARB (actuator contiguous wheel slip limitation) technology and the BMW Performance Control. The M Sport suspension has a -10 mm reduction in ride height, while the optional Adaptive suspension with VDC (Variable Damper Control) offers the choise between Comfort and Sport modes. The car is also equipped with with electromechanical M Sport steering with Servotronic function and M Sport brakes.
Visually, the 1 Series adopted BMW’s latest design identity, distancing itself from its predecessors with more conventional proportions due to the FWD layout. Compared to the lesser versions, the M135i xDrive was distinguished by a sporty bodykit that included new front and rear bumpers, mesh design for the kidney grille, side sills, large rear spoiler, 100mm tailpipes, high gloss black details and 18″ wheels (optional 19″). Inside we find a 10,25″ digital instrument cluster, an optional 9,2″ colour Head-Up Display and another 10,25″ touch screen sitting on the center console which like in all BMW models is tilted towards the driver.
