Fiat Punto HGT
Description
The second generation Punto (codenamed Project 188) was launched in September 1999 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The styling was all new, retaining the original Punto’s distinctive shape and design, while the chassis and interior were completely overhauled, with a new torsion beam rear suspension.
The fastest version of the second generation Punto was the 1.8 HGT that accelerated from 0-100km/h in 8.6 seconds and had a top speed of 205 km/h (127mph). It was considered a big improvement in handling over the Punto GT.
The HGT was also available (in limited numbers) as an “HGT Abarth” which added deeper bumpers with larger air intakes, rear spoiler, side skirts, new alloy wheels and interior trim, however it had no technical improvements over the regular HGT.
In 2003 the car received a major facelift that included larger headlights and tailights, redesigned bumpers and a new grille. The facelifted version also had an “HGT” derivative using the same engine and sharing the sporty bodykit with the less powerful “Sporting” versions.
