Description

The Renault 5 Turbo  (not to be focused with the more conventional R5 Alpine Turbo or the later R5 GT Turbo) was a homologation special launched at the 1980 Brussels Motor Show with a limited production run of 5000 vehicles until 1986.

The story starts back in 1975, when Renault needed a car to comply with the Group 4 rules so they could compete in the World Rally Championship. In order to do that, Renault’s vice president Jean Terramorsi, decided to completely transform the R5, from a front-engine and FWD city car to a mid-engine and RWD beast.

The production version of the R5 Turbo was fitted with a four cylinder 1379 cc engine placed behind the drivers seat, producing 119 kw / 160 bhp and 221 Nm of torque thanks to a Garrett AiResearch T3 turbocharger. A five-speed manual transmission sent the power to the rear wheels while the car was equipped with double wishbone suspension, anti-roll bar, rear coil springs and ventilated disc brakes in all four wheels. Performance-wise, the R5 Turbo could accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds with a top speed of 200km/h.

Visually, the R5 Turbo featured a heavily restyled body designed by Bertone, with significantly wider arches and additional side air intakes for cooling the engine.

The first batch of 400 cars were manufactured at the Alpine factory in Dieppe, however the model proved to be really popular and Renault decided to continue production. In 1983, Renault launched the 5 Turbo II which featured steel body panels instead of alloy and a standard interior, making it more affordable than the previous version. After production ended in 1986, the R5 Turbo didn’t get a direct successor, until 1998 with the 1998 announcement of the Renault Clio V6.
