Renault Clio I Williams

Description

The first generation of the Renault Clio was a B-segment car launched at the 1990 Paris Motor Show as a successor to the aging Renault 5.

The fastest version of the model was the Renault Clio I Williams, launched in 1993 as a limited edition model (for homologation purposes). Initially the plan was to produce 3.800 cars but due to great demand, Renault eventually built more than 12.000 units (Williams 1, 2 and 3) until 1996. The car was named after the then Renault-powered Formula One team Williams F1, though Williams had nothing to do with the design or engineering of this Clio. The modifications to the Clio 16S on which it was based were the work of Renault Sport, Renault’s motorsport division.

The Clio Williams was fitted with a naturally aspirated 2.0 L 16-valve straight-4 engine rated at 147 hp (108 kW), combined with an uprated 5 speed manual gearbox and featuring a performance tuned suspension. The engine had different size valves, cams, stroked crank and engine oil cooler in comparison with the smaller engine of the Clio 16S. The car also featured a wider front track with wishbones similar to the Renault 19, and bespoke four-to-one manifold.

Visually, the Clio Williams is distinquished by the 449 Sports Blue colour (or the slightly brighter 432 Monaco Blue for the latest Williams 3 model), mated with the unique gold-painted Speedline alloy wheels. It also featured wider arches, body coloured bumpers, fog lights, asymmetrical offset bonnet and hood scoop, rear spoiler, larger exhaust pipe and Williams badging.
