Saab 9-3 Viggen

Description

The first generation of the Saab 9-3 launched in 1998 as updated version of it’s predecessor, the 900 (NG).

The performance version, Saab 9-3 Viggen (named after the Saab 37 Viggen aircraft), was based on the 9-3 Aero and was available between 1999 and 2002 both in 3-door and 5-door bodystyles. The car was fitted with a turbocharged 2.3 L engine (B235R) producing 225 hp (168 kW) and 342 Nm of torque, combined with a 5 speed manual transmission. Later on, the engine was uprated to 230 hp (172 kw) thanks to the Mitsubishi TD04-HL15-5 turbocharger.

The Viggen version was equipped with a higher capacity intercooler, performance tuned ECU, flow through muffler and tip, heavy duty clutch and pressure plate, stiffened and lowered springs, firmer dampers, upgraded brakes, as well as stronger CV joints and driveshafts. In 1999, the Viggen was the first 9-3 to use Saab’s Trionic 7 engine management system and in 2001 the model got a Traction Control System (TCS).

Visually, the car was fitted with the aerodynamically designed bumpers and side skirts of the Aero, however it had a different rear wing, Viggen badges on the front fenders and an exhaust pipe with a different shape. Inside, it came with heated, heavy bolstered leather seats, CD player, power sunroof and carbon fiber interior trim.
