VW Corrado G60

Description

The Volkswagen Corrado was a compact four passenger (2+2), three-door, front-engine, front-wheel drive hatchback marketed by Volkswagen from 1988-1995, designed by Herbert Schäfer, and manufactured by Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany. The Corrado’s floorpan was based on the A2 platform (Golf MK2).

The VW Corrado G60 was fitted with an 8 valve inline four supercharged 1.8 liter engine producing 160 hp (118 kw) of power and 225 Nm of torque, mated to a 5 speed manual transmission. The G60 accelerated from 0-100 km/h in 8,3 seconds and could reach a top speed of 225 km/h (140 mph).

The more powerful VW Corado VR6 launched in 1992, fited with a naturally aspirated V6, 2.9 liter engine producing 190 hp (140 kw) of power and 245 Nm of torque. The VR6 engine provided a compromise between both V shaped and straight engines by placing the two cylinder banks at an angle of 15°, with a single cylinder head. This design allowed engineers to fit a six cylinder engine into roughly the space previously occupied by four cylinder engines, while closely approaching the smoothness of a straight six design. The VR6 accelerated from 0-100 km/h in 6,9 seconds and could reach a top speed of 235 km/h (146 mph). The VR6 used suspension components from the newer generation model range (Golf MK3), including the rear axle assembly and some parts of the ‘plus’ type front axle assembly. Visually, the Corrado VR6 was distinguished by the redesigned front wings with wider wheel arches to house the wider front tracks, new front grille and foglamps.
