VW Golf I GTI 1.8

Description

The original Volkswagen Golf was a C-Segment, front wheel drive car launched in 1974, that would form the base of the father of the hot hatchbacks. The Golf was intended to be the successor of the iconic Beetle, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Italdesign.

The original Golf GTI, was launched at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show. It was  not the first hot hatchback but it was definitely one of the cars that contributed to the establishment of this category in the market, thanks to the great performance figures and handling capabilities, combined with practicality and affordability. The original GTI was fitted with a naturally aspirated 1588 cc engine equipped with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection technology, producing 110 hp (81 kw) and 140 Nm of torque, combined with a 4 speed manual gearbox. Thanks to the low weight of only 810 kg, it could accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 9,1 seconds, and could reach a top speed of 182 km/h (113 mph). The car also featured stiffened suspensions, a more rigid frame as well as larger brakes.

In 1979, the updated version was fitted with a naturally aspirated 1780 cc engine producing 111 hp (82 kw) and 152 Nm of torque, combined with a new 5 speed manual gearbox. The updated model could accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 8,2 seconds, and could reach a top speed of 188 km/h (117 mph).

Visually, the Golf I GTI was distinguished by the red grille frame, the GTI badge, the front splitter and the plastic wheel arch extensions. Inside it had a golf ball style gear stick, plaid linings upholstery and a sports steering wheel.

The total sales of the Golf I GTI were 461.690 cars, making it a huge success in the market before it was replaced by the second generation in 1983.
