The seventh generation of the Volkswagen Golf is a C-Segment car launched at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, based on the new MQB platform. The car received a facelift in 2016 with various mechanical and visual updates.

The most powerful version of the seventh generation was the VW Golf VII R, launched in 2013. The car was fitted with a 2.0 liter TSI engine (E1888)producing 300 hp (221 kw) of power and 380 Nm of torque, combined with either a six speed manual or a six speed DSG dual clutch gearbox. The car accelerated from 0-100 km/h in 5,1 seconds (4,9 seconds with the DSG) and could reach an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). The engine had a newly designed cylinder head together with updated exhaust valves, valve seats and springs, pistons, high-pressure injection valves, and featured a more efficient thermal management. The car featured the latest generation 4MOTION all-wheel drive system with Haldex 5 coupling, unique suspension setting (MacPherson-type front suspension with a newly developed low wishbone and track-stabilising scrub radius), lowered ride height by 20 mm, progressive steering, XDS+ at the front and rear axles, four electronic differential locks (EDS), DCC dynamic chassis control system (Comfort, Normal, Sport and Race modes), ESC Sport function and a more powerful braking system. Visually, the new Golf R was distinguished by the redesigned bumpers with large air inlets and modified radiator grille, side sills, black mirror caps, 18-inch or 19 inch alloy wheels, bi xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights, tinted LED rear lights, four chrome tailpipes, rear diffuser and roof spoiler. Inside, the Golf R featured sport seats in a “fabric-Alcantara” material mix, leather-trimmed three-spoke sport steering wheel, ambience lighting, automatic climate control and a radio-CD system with touchscreen.

The VW Golf VII R (facelift) was launched in 2017, with an updated version of the 2.0 liter TSI engine producing 310 hp (228 kw) of power and up to 400 Nm of torque thanks to the new 7 speed DSG dual clutch transmission (the car was also available with the 6 speed manual and 380 Nm of power). Thanks to the power upgrades the facelifted model accelerated from 0-100 km/h in 4,6 seconds with the DSG (5,1 seconds with the manual) and could reach an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (mph). Visually, the facelifted model featured new front bumper with more modern design for the air inlets, redesigned LED headlights, updated LED tailight graphics, restyled diffuser, new 18 inch or 19 inch wheels with high gloss finish,upgraded mirror caps and an optional titanium sport exhaust system from Akrapovi. Inside the cars featured a digital instrument cluster and an updated Modular Infotainment Matrix (MIB) -with 9,2 inch screen and gesture control. Finally, the facelifted models also received various safety and driving assistant systems.
