VW Golf VIII R
The eighth generation of the Volkswagen Golf is a C-Segment car launched in 2019, based on an updated version of the MQB platform. In March 2020, Volkswagen unveiled 3 performance versions of the Golf – the GTI (gasoline), the GTD (diesel) and the GTE (plug-in hybrid), followed by the more focused GTI Clubsport (October 2020), the flagship Golf R (November 2020) and the anniversary model GTI Clubsport 45 (February 2021).
The Golf R is fitted with an updated version of the turbocharged four-cylinder 2.0 TSI engine (EA888 evo4) producing 235 kW / 320 hp of power and 420 Nm of torque, mated to a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Power is transmitted to all four wheels through the 4Motion system with torque vectoring – selective wheel torque control on the rear axle thanks to a new rear differential. With the help of the launch control, the Golf R can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4,7″ while the top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). The car is also equipped with Vehicle Dynamics Manager (VDM), electronic differential locks (XDS), DCC adaptive damping system, and a new suspension setup lowered by 20 mm.
Visually, the Golf R is distinguished by the redesigned bodykit that is unique although similar to the GTI Clubsport. That includes a front bumper with large intakes and aluminum finish on the splitter, illuminated R-badged grille, 19″ wheels, chrome windows, extended side sills, rear diffuser with integrated quadruple round tailpipes from Akrapovic, and a two-piece rear spoiler. The color palette is limited to Lapiz Blue Metallic, Pure White, or Deep Black Pearl Effect.
Inside, we find sport seats upholstered in black Nappa leather with blue stitching, perforated leather steering wheel with touch controls and paddles for the DSG gearbox, carbon-fiber look finish, stainless steel pedals, ambient lighting, and R-specific graphics for the Digital Cockpit (12,3″ digital instrument cluster and 10″ central touchscreen).
