Volkswagen presents the Golf VII GTE HyRACER concept

Big stage for the sporty Golf GTE HyRACER from Volkswagen Group Retail Germany. Apprentices present their project in the Autostadt in Wolfsburg. The vehicle project was originally planned for the 39th Wörthersee meeting in May 2020, but it was canceled due to the corona. The trainees at Volkswagen Group Retail Germany customized the vehicle within a few months. Together they planned the Golf GTE HyRACER and built it according to their ideas. The “Hy” stands for hybrid and “RACER” alludes to the dynamic genes of the show car with road approval.

Not only the fans but also our trainees have been looking forward to these days for many years. There they show their amazing skills and genuine passion for automotive engineering in an annual project. For the first time this year, the trainees from our own trading company Volkswagen Group Retail Germany are also involved. With the Golf GTE HyRACER project they show their skills and the potential in our apprenticeships. We want to convey precisely this enthusiasm to our customers. ”

This project is a premiere for Volkswagen Group Retail Germany. The trainees were able to apply via an internal application process. A total of 13 young women and men were selected from a large number of submissions. The vehicle body was logistically a masterpiece. The trainees came from different car dealerships across Germany and were only able to work together on the car for a limited period of time. Precise planning, intensive coordination and independent work were therefore the prerequisites for a successful implementation of the project.
The craftsmanship in mechanics, bodywork and painting was in the foreground in the design and conversion. The Golf GTE HyRACER has an individual body kit consisting of a front apron with the distinctive C signature, front splitter, widened fenders, rear apron with diffuser, roof spoiler with the integrated Arteon brake light, a sports exhaust system with a central double tailpipe that gives the HyRACER a rich sound , as well as an individually adjustable sports suspension that lowers the GTE by 40 mm. The widening of the entire vehicle is over 80 mm. The system performance of the Golf HyRACER was only slightly modified and increased to around 185 kW (250 PS). The individualized Golf stands on genuine unique items: The black powder-coated 19-inch rims were specially designed by the trainees for their vehicle project. 265 mm wide tires provide the necessary grip on the asphalt and a braking system with a 380 mm brake disc brings the vehicle to a standstill again.
The interior was largely equipped with Alcantara. The contrasting blue decorative stitching and the sporty seats with integrated headrests and the quilted “GTE HyRACER” lettering in blue show impressively that the trainees have also dealt with details. The well-known check pattern on the seats and door panels matches this. The high-quality Alcantara steering wheel with blue 0 o’clock marking and blue decorative stitching rounds off the cockpit harmoniously. A nice detail in the interior is the trainee logo, which was specially designed for the project by the trainees. Another eye-catcher in the trunk: two electric scooters, which can also be charged there and used electrically at the destination.
Another highlight is hidden under the bonnet: all 13 trainees have their names immortalized on a metal plate. In addition, the ten economic areas of Volkswagen Group Retail Germany and the trainee logo were lasered into the plate. Indirect lighting lets the metal plate shine in different colors.
The vocational training secures and qualifies the future specialist staff of Volkswagen Group Retail Germany and is therefore a decisive strategic factor in the philosophy of the retail organization. Around 1,250 apprentices are currently working in technical and commercial professions at Volkswagen Group Retail Germany. These include the technical apprenticeships for automotive mechatronics, vehicle painters, bodywork and vehicle construction mechanics and the commercial professions of automotive clerk, warehouse logistics specialist, retail clerk as well as IT systems clerk and IT specialist.
